Visual Fire Alarms - Parliamentary Report now available

Parliament’s Government Administration Select Committee has reported back to the House over the Visual Fire Alarm petition.

The Report is in response to 737 people signing an online petition, presented by Kim Robinson, requesting that the House update fire safety legislation to improve safety for those who are deaf and hard of hearing by requiring visual fire alarms to be installed in public buildings.

The Report states that:

  • the Building Code should be amended to make visual fire alarms mandatory in public buildings
  • the Ministry of Innovation and Employment and the Department of Internal Affairs are reviewing the current rules around fire safety and evacuations, and the report urges that mandatory visual fire alarms are included as part of this work.
